As new
parents, there are many decisions to be made for the health of your baby.
An important discussion that needs to take place is whether you will
choose to vaccinate or not vaccinate your child. Vaccinations are not mandatory in Canada;
therefore parents need to be educated about the risks and benefits involved so
that it can be an informed decision. To
see what vaccines are recommended by Public Health Canada, you can follow this link. When looking at all the vaccinations offered,
it is important to look at the risk of infection of certain diseases, the
possible short and long term consequences.

For
those parents who choose not to vaccinate, it is important to familiarize with
the signs and symptoms of different diseases. They also need to be aware of any
requirements that certain schools or camps have in regards to
vaccinations. In addition, boosting a
child’s immune system with the following is beneficial: breastfeeding, adequate
sleep, decreased stress, decreased environmental toxins, and regular visits
with their family chiropractor.

If
parents decide on vaccinating their child, they can specifically choose
vaccines that they feel are appropriate for their child to have. One important guideline to follow is to omit
vaccines with mercury (thimerisol) or live viruses. Parents can opt for partial vaccines where
they do individual inoculations. An example
would be to have the diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus independently and at
separate times. Parents should be aware
of what to look for, should there be an adverse reaction and report it to the
Public Health Agency of Canada. It is important to note the lot number, date, time,
amount and who administered the vaccine.
Some countries suggest delaying the vaccinations until age 2, or at
least until they have been weaned from breastfeeding as they feel that these
children have less reactions. And
finally, it is important to boost the child’s immune system before the shots,
and this can be achieved in giving them vitamin C and Vitamin B complex for 48
hours before and after the vaccination, as well as have the child checked by
their family chiropractor pre and post vaccination.

For
those parents who feel that there are risks with the conventional vaccines but
feel that they need to do something,
there are Homeopathic vaccines. Homeopathic
immunizations do not involve injections; alternately they are taken orally in a
sugar pill form. Immunization remedies are made from disease matter. They are prepared in a homeopathic manner in
order to render them completely safe and non-toxic and they do not contain
toxins or chemicals. Once the homeopathic remedy is administered, it is
recognized by the body so that when the child comes across the disease later in
life, the body is equipped to fight it off.

As to whether you should vaccinate your
child or not, only you can and should make that decision. Ultimately, parents deserve to have access
to all the information available, so that their choice about vaccinating
(conventional or homeopathic) or non-vaccinating, can be an informed one.
Listed below are a few resources:

Randall Neustaedter

Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" by Stephanie Cave.
The issues and vaccinations are broken down and discussed individually, she
offers an alternative schedule as well as some suggestions on how to best
optimize the child's outcome if vaccination is the choice.

I often get asked, "why do so many naturopathic doctors tell people they have food allergies?" My simple answer is, there is an ever growing number of people who, for many different reasons, have become intolerant to certain families of food. Elizabeth Landau from CNN has written a great article describing the rise in food allergies. Click here to read the article "Why Are Food Allegies On The Rise?"

She touches on the hygiene hypothesis - the idea that the cleaner our environments in our infancy, the greater likelihood that we go unexposed to certain bacteria that prompt our immune systems to become more adept at recognizing proteins in bugs to fight later in life rather than proteins found in foods, the environment, and in our own bodies (how autoimmune diseases are believed to develop). This idea of over-hygiene lends itself to the medical concept, dysbiosis, which describes the unbalanced state of good bacteria in the gut responsible for two thirds of our immune system. Elizabeth writes that "our immune system is skewed away from fighting infections, and toward fighting things that it's not supposed to be fighting, like things in the environment or foods -- that's one thing that people think may be in play." Food allergy tests, elimination diets, and probiotics have become the mainstays of investigation and treatment of suspected food allergies. These allergies are not often acute reactions to ingesting food. They are more seen as persistent symptoms that can come on hours after eating an offending food making it difficult to discern the causative agent. Symptoms can be as vague as fatigue and cloudy thinking to more specific like a eczema rash on knuckles. Getting the opinion of a qualified healthcare practitioner is the first step in determining whether dysbiosis due to food allergies may be at play with your health.

Dr. Bobby Parmar
Naturopathic Physician
evolve Nurturing Vitality
102-2025 West Broadway
www.evolvevitality.com
t.604.255.7777

Canadians are using acid blocking drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Pariet, Pantloc and Prevacid at an all time high. Last year alone nearly 17 million prescriptions were filled at a cost of over 1 billion dollars. It begs the question, are we experiencing a heartburn epidemic?

The reality is, people often start PPIs because of a few episodes of recurrent heartburn or ulcer related stomach pain and then never come off of them. Reasons for this may include fear of a return of symptoms, dependence, or no one has ever suggested discontinuing the medicines. However, the more people are on these drugs the more we learn about adverse effects that can cause long-term health complications far more serious than risks associated with heartburn.

A study has been recently published detailing the risks associated with PPIs. After 5 years of use our risk of hip fracture due to osteoporosis increases by 1.6. After 7 years, that risk jumps to 4.5 times that of someone not on PPIs. The drugs block acid, which is required to properly absorb vitamin B12 and calcium and destroy opportunistic bacteria. With this knowledge, physicians are providing caveats to patients that long-term PPI therapy includes potential for hip fractures as well as anemia and infections of C. Difficile bacteria. Fractures are concerning because of their debilitating effects and a 20% chance of death within 6 months of suffering a hip fracture. This may sound alarmist, but it is more an account of the unnecessary risks people are taking because of a symptom like heartburn which can be effectively treated by a variety of other means.

Diet and lifestyle are two very effective routes to reduce the triggers for heartburn. Digestive enzymes and botanicals with soothing properties are also supportive and healing to an irritated digestive tract. Getting a thorough medical history by a qualified healthcare practitioner is important to understand why symptoms persist. It is also prudent to reduce and eliminate current medications like PPIs. A qualified practitioner can initiate step down therapy of the drug, while supporting the digestive system.

Please see your healthcare provider for more information.
Dr. Bobby Parmar
Naturopathic Physician
evolve Nurturing Vitality

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral deviation
of the normal vertical line of the spine, which, when measured by Xray, is
greater than 10 degrees. Scoliosis can
be a serious condition, however if it is detected early, the chances for
stabilization and reduction of the curves are very good.

Conventional medical options include a
watch and wait approach, bracing and finally surgery. Bracing is typically the medical approach for
curves between 25 to 30 degrees. These
braces exert pressure against the spine in hope of achieving stabilization,
however they do not correct the curves.

Chiropractors work with the spine and look
at spinal joint motion and alignment.
Curves can be stabilized and even reduced with Chiropractic care by
leveling the pelvis, strengthening the psoas muscles and maintaining spinal
motion in the neck. Over 80% of patients
with a scoliosis greater than 30 degrees have been shown to have a loss of a
normal cervical curve as well as a reversal (kyphosis) of the curve. Chiropractors, in addition to massage therapy
and acupuncture can help restore normal functional curves in scoliotic
patients.

People who don't drink milk are liable to shatter to pieces should they fall down. At least that is what many come to believe of non-dairy consumers.

Understandably, this is the consequence of effective marketing on behalf of the dairy industry that produces inventive media campaigns celebrating milk as the only means to grow, be strong, and prevent bone loss. In reality, strength does not only lie in a glass of milk.

Calcium is our bone strength mineral. What's more, it helps maintain healthy teeth, functions in the clotting of blood, maintains the regular rhythm of the heart muscle, and keeps our nerves firing. Our blood is constantly in a state of flux regulating its calcium balance. When dietary intake of calcium is limited our body borrows calcium from our bones which together with our teeth store roughly 99% of our total internal supply. Over time with the absence of dietary calcium our bones can lend more of the mineral to keep the other calcium dependent processes functioning, but at a cost to our skeleton. This cumulative skeletal debt burden equals osteoporosis and increases the risk of falls. Bones continuously build their structure until we are 30 years of age. After that point, we start naturally losing bone. Many factors are implicated in this process including:

1. Hormones like estrogen and testosterone, which when dramatically reduced around the time of menopause in women and more slowly during andropause in men, lose their protective effect on bone health.
2. Vitamin D, which plays an essential role in the absorption and maintenance of calcium. However, for all Canadians vitamin D status becomes a challenge during Winter months because it is less readily produced in the skin without adequate Summer quality sunlight exposure. This is moreso a problem for people with darker complexions whose skin naturally blocks sunrays. Supplementation of vitamin D is therefore prudent during the months between October and April. Current research is indicating that fall occurance and subsequent fractures are significantly reduced by healthy vitamin D levels in the body.
3. Vitamin K, which is also very important for bone health and is present in green leafy vegetables.
4. Weight-bearing exercise, which is crucial because stress on the skeleton forces it to become denser and stronger. A variety of these exercises, like walking, running, racquet sports, and weight training, is necessary to ensure overall structural integrity of the body. Swimming is an example of non-weight bearing activity that does not provide much skeletal support.
5. Consumption of acidic foods, such as carbonated soda drinks and excessive protein. Both protein and phosphorus create and environment in the body that favours calcium resorption from bone. Keep protein levels around 70 Grams per day and limit intake of soda beverages which contain phosphorus.
6. Consumption of tannins found in tea, phytates found in raw nuts and seeds, and oxalates found in spinach, which all decrease Calcium absorption. Although spinach is popularly considered a great source of calcium, that positive effect is offset by the amount of oxalates, which bind the calcium rendering it useless to the body.

Other non-dairy sources of Calcium include kale, soybean, bok choy, collards, orange juice, beans, legumes, and other fortified drinks. Many people can get frustrated and bogged down by daily equivalents of these foods. Is it one cup of kale or two? If I don't have orange juice today I should eat three cups of kale. I suggest relaxing the mathematics of these daily requirement equations and just enjoy a variety of these foods, everyday all the while being cognizant of the foods that in abundance reduce calcium uptake and absorption.

Calcium supplementation is another effective means to generate calcium storage in the body. Two reliable forms of calcium are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Although Calcium carbonate is relatively inexpensive, it requires stomach acid to digest and absorb and so needs to be taken with meals and for people with low stomach acidity this may be a challenge therefore, the citrate form would be the best consideration for these individuals. Supplementation for an adult should range between 700mG and 1000mG per day, with the exception of men who should consider 500mG per day as excess calcium has been implicated in aggressive prostate cancer risk.

We have been confused to believe that dairy and particularly milk are our only methods of obtaining healthful calcium and that if we do not calorie count our daily calcium intake we are liable to fall apart from osteoporosis one day. As I have outlined, this is simply not the case. Should you have any questions regarding your own calcium intake or risk for osteoporosis consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. In the meantine you can calculate your risk for osteporosis with a very simple, reliable and effective equation:

Age - Weight (kg) = Chance of osteoporosis
If the answer is greater than 20, then your chance is approximately between 50 and 60%
If the answer is between 0 and 20, then your chance is approximately between 15 and 20%
If the answer is less than 0, then your chance is approximately less than 5%.

Dr. Bobby Parmar
Naturopathic Physician
evolve Nurturing Vitality
102-2025 West Broadway
www.evolvevitality.com
t.604.255.7777

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month:

Osteoporosis
occurs when new bone formation cannot be generated fast enough to
compensate for the natural process of bone reabsorption. This imbalance
creates an initial loss of bone mass, called osteopenia. As the
condition progresses to osteoporosis, bone strength gets compromised
leaving it susceptible to breaks and fractures. These fractures can
affect the extremities, the hip and the spine. Treatments for
osteoporosis are tailored toward increasing bone density, and are either
a preventative regimen or procedures to slow its progession. Calcium
intake, diet and hormone status should be addressed, as well as an
exercise plan put into action.

Chiropractic care can help alleviate pain associtated with
osteoporosis. Furthermore, the treatment can help increase or maintain
joint mobility and range of motion which can improve everyday quality of
life. Exercises given are also a big part part of the chiropractic
treatment plan and a well-designed exercise program can improve posture,
help to reduce
bone loss, and prevent fractures, while also reducing symptoms.
Our
exercise recommendations allow for strengthening of the spinal support
mechanisms to
prevent kyphosis and compression fractures in our elderly patients.

Other
effective treatments for osteoporosis include massage therapy,
Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. At evolve

attended the Upper Extremity course for Active Release Technique. Dr.
Giselle has now completed 2 of 3 ART courses and is on her way to being
Full Body Certified. By adding another level of training, Dr. Giselle
can further enhance the effects of the chiropractic adjustment to the
patient. She looks forward to completing her final certification in the
upcoming months.

ART is a safe and highly successful technique that, in addition to
adjustments, can give many patients the relief and recovery that they
need and are looking for. The upper extremity protocols for ART can
help with repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome,
tennis and golfer's elbow and swimmer's shoulder which happen over
time. Acute injuries from lifting or pushing heavy objects can also be
addressed with ART, as strained or scarred muscles and tissues can cause
a lot of pain, and can also entrap the many nerves in the shoulder and
arm.

Crying is one of the ways a baby communicates and the average infant cries between two to three hours a day. Colic presents as a constantly irritable baby who is well-fed and otherwise healthy. The clinical definition of colic follows the Rule of Three: violent crying three hours per day, three days per week for at least three weeks. It can begin about 3 weeks following birth up to 3-4 months of age.

Suggested causes may include gas, lactose intolerance, food allergies, constipation or structural weakness within the infant’s stomach area. Any of these causes may be attributed to nerve dysfunction and joint misalignments within the spine resulting from the birthing process. This can negatively affect the communication between the brain and the digestive organs.

There are many babies that are irritable, yet do not meet the criteria for colic. They can be described as one who is generally difficult to calm, is only content when held, is at times inconsolable even when physiological needs have been met and cries more often than a content baby. Many of these babies are irritable due to a musculoskeletal origin and may present with an unusual posture, often arching their back, muscle tightness along the spine and sleep disturbances.

Top tips to ease the pain of colic and irritable babies:

#1 – Have your baby assessed by your family Chiropractor. Function of your baby’s spine and nervous system can play an integral role in the overall health of your child. Healthy babies, free of nerve irritation, are happier babies. Musculoskeletal irritation can cause a great discomfort for the baby, thus causing the irritability.

#2 – Dietary considerations. Food allergies are of interest when it comes to colic. Many clinical studies have shown that the baby’s discomfort may be caused by reactions to certain foods. For example, many children have been known to be intolerant to milk proteins from cow’s milk, either in their formula or through the mother’s breastmilk. Pasteurized cow’s milk consumed by a breastfeeding mother has been shown to be a trigger for colic. Other common food allergies to consider include soy, nuts and gluten.

Fruit juice should also be avoided. Mothers should be taking Vitamin D, B vitamins and omega 3 oils. There are antispasmodic teas which can offer therapeutic relief. These teas include chamomile, fennel, licorice and lemon balm. These can be ingested either by the mother or the infant by using an eye dropper (10 to 20 drops).

#3 – Quality Probiotics for Mother and Baby. Probiotics repair and support the infant’s digestive system.

#4 – Correct Breastfeeding Technique. If a mother – baby duo are struggling to successfully breastfeed, advice from a lactation consultant can be very helpful. Some newborns struggle to get a good latch on the nipple, which may be due to poor breastfeeding technique or inability to open their jaw fully. If it is the latter, a visit to the Chiropractor may help release any restrictions.

The Labour Day weekend marked the end of the summer and beginning of the school and Fall season. During this time, both Dr. Chamberlain and Dr. Rahim attended the Active Release Technique (ART) seminar here in Vancouver.

This was the first of 3 ART seminars for Dr. Chamberlain and she is now certified in Spine protocols. She will complete the Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity protocols over the next 9 months. In the last few weeks since her certification, she has already seen some impressive results with resolving both acute and chronic pain conditions in her patients by using both ART and giving adjustments.

Dr. Rahim had the opportunity to complete the Master’s ART course With Dr. Michael Leahy, founder of ART. Dr. Shamira spent four and a half hours with seven other colleagues and the founder of ART, learning further skills and new protocols to help patients with chronic pain and repetitive injuries. New protocols include further success in resolving rotator cuff injuries/conditions and whiplash related symptoms.

These injuries, among many others, can be seen not only in adults and our elderly population, but also in our athletic teens and children who participate in repetitive activities. With the use of ART, Drs. Rahim and Chamberlain have additional tools to help resolve many chronic and acute injuries and conditions. In addition, adding supplementation of calcium/magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin C can also enhance healthy tissue.

ART is a safe and highly successful technique that, in addition to adjustments, can give many patients the relief and recovery that they need and are looking for.

Fat is an important and often misunderstood part of our diet. It is garnered much attention as of late with the idea that there are good fats and bad fats and that good fats generally come from fish sources. Vegetarians and vegans are often challenged with the question, am I getting enough fats? Recent investigations into healthy eating practices have shed some significant light on the issue of fats in our diet with particular emphasis on comparative studies between fat intake in vegetarians/vegans with that of omnivores. With ever-changing understanding of nutrition, I ask what is the latest skinny on fats in plant-based diets? Do vegetarians/vegans need to start thinking about consuming another popular F-word - Fish oils?

Fats are important. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are by name and function crucial to our health. They come in two varieties - Linoleic Acid (LA) and Alpha -linolenic acid (ALA) and both must be consumed and converted to their healthful derivatives EPA and DHA for proper functioning of every organ system in our body. In order to gain the healthful effects of these fats they must meet certain criteria. These criteria include both eating the optimal ratio of omega-6 (LA) to omega-3 (ALA) and their proper conversion in the body via enzymes. The optimal dietary ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is roughly 2:1. The human body is a poor converter of ALA to EPA/DHA, deriving at most a mere 10% of EPA/DHA from ALA. When eating fish oils converting these fats is not a problem because we are consuming them directly. In addition, LA competes with ALA for precious enzymes in the conversion process which adds another hurdle.

Vegetarians and vegans who consume large quantities of LA and not enough ALA are therefore on the wrong side of the equation. Vegans especially intake more than twice the amount of omega-6 fats which causes the ratio to tilt into a more dis-ease producing direction which includes heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and immune disorders. Sources of LA include: cereals, breads, and evening primrose oil. Sources of ALA include: Chia, Kiwifruit and Flax. Knowing all of these challenges vegetarians/vegans face in getting the right amounts of essential fatty acids, what can we do to keep ourselves full of the right fats?

When done right, vegetarian and vegan diets are incomparably healthy. Improving EFA status is relatively easy without having to consume fish oils. We must ensure that the conversion of ALA to EPA/DHA is high. We can do this by eating adequate amounts of protein to guarantee the production of enzymes that take part in the conversion process. Also. we need to limit our intake of alcohol and trans fats as they depress the enzymes function. We can also decrease LA intake by cooking less with safflower, grapeseed, sunflower, corn and soybean oils. Instead, monounsaturated fats in olive and canola oils and whole foods such as avocados and most nuts are preferred in our diets. Processed foods and deep fried foods have high omega-6 and trans fat content and should be kept in dietary moderation in order to sustain a healthful fats balance. Recommended intake of ALA rich foods is roughly 3 grams per day. Most importantly, we need to keep the VEG in vegetarian/vegan and eat a diverse amount of whole foods and vegetables to ensure that we are maintaining a solid foundation.

Being a vegetarian/vegan is not as difficult a challenge as some believe it to be. With the right information and guidance the equation for health/dis-ease balances right into place. Furthermore, it is always prudent to consult a qualified health practitioner for support and a fresh perspective.

Hello Everyone!

The countdown is on for the Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay for the kids: just 1 week away! For those of you interested, or those of you who haven't pledged yet, there is still time to donate to this excellent cause. Kick start your summer by helping us send deserving kids to camp! Easter Seals Camps give BC children with disabilities the chance to discover their individual abilities. Camp sessions are carefully planned and designed to encourage these children to gain new skills, develop new friendships, gain confidence and independence; skills that will help them to live lasting and fulfilling lives. On average, over 800 children with disabilities from all over BC attend a one-week camping session at one of three Easter Seals camps located across the province: Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island, Squamish near Vancouver, and Winfield in the Okanagan. It is because of fundraising events like the Money Mart Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay For The Kids that the BC Lions Society is able to operate the camping program at no cost to the families, many of whom are already financially burdened by the costs associated with raising children with special needs. On June 20th-21st, Team Travis will be at Swann Guard stadium running for 24 hours, and you can help us by donating online at www.24hourrelay.com. Select Team Travis and my name: Alaina Overton. Your help is tremendously appreciated!!!

Have an excellent summer,

A healthy intestinal lining only allows properly digested food particles to pass through while simultaneously serving as a barrier to microorganisms and undigested foods from being absorbed into the bloodstream. At times the integrity of the intestinal wall is compromised for a number of reasons: food allergies, chronic stress, dysbiosis, enzyme deficiencies, pharmaceutical drug use, and injury. When this happens the immune system reacts to anything foreign it does not recognize by creating inflammatory processes.

Our immunity faces a host of challenges that ultimately if left untreated can trigger allergic reactions beyond the digestive system. Some of the more common dis-eases include: Acne, Arthritis, Asthma, Celiac disease, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn's Disease, Eczema, Food allergies, Irritable bowel syndrome, Psoriasis, and Weight gain.

A healthy digestive system is fundamental for a healthy mind and body. All of the energy we need to function is obtained from one source - the food we eat and in turn our body's ability to optimally utilize the food. Determining the status of your digestive system is imperative in understanding how it may be contributing to non-optimal health. Exploration through allergy testing has a high degree of accuracy for detecting antibodies created by the immune system in response to ingestion of an offending food or weakness in the gut wall.

In order to best understand what may be happening in your system, for support and a fresh perspective consult with a qualified healthcare professional like a naturopathic doctor.
