Osteoporosis Awareness Month

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month:

Osteoporosis occurs when new bone formation cannot be generated fast enough to compensate for the natural process of bone reabsorption.  This imbalance creates an initial loss of bone mass, called osteopenia.  As the condition progresses to osteoporosis, bone strength gets compromised leaving it susceptible to breaks and fractures.  These fractures can affect the extremities, the hip and the spine.  Treatments for osteoporosis are tailored toward increasing bone density, and are either a preventative regimen or procedures to slow its progession.  Calcium intake, diet and hormone status should be addressed, as well as an exercise plan put into action. 

Chiropractic care can help alleviate pain associtated with osteoporosis.  Furthermore, the treatment can help increase or maintain joint mobility and range of motion which can improve everyday quality of life.  Exercises given are also a big part part of the chiropractic treatment plan and a well-designed exercise program can improve posture, help to reduce bone loss, and prevent fractures, while also reducing symptoms. 
Our exercise recommendations allow for strengthening of the spinal support mechanisms to prevent kyphosis and compression fractures in our elderly patients.
