Food Allergy Awareness

This week is food allergy awareness week. In the last few years Vancouver has seen an enormous increase in options for people with dairy-free and gluten-free diets. Grocery stores are stocking shelves with hypoallergenic options and restaurants are filling their menus with the same. Hyopallergenic is the new Organic! Why this has happened is a reflection of our changing understanding of... See more food allergies and food intolerances. We are quickly recognizing the dramatic health effects certain food groups can have on our well-being. The two greatest food sensitivities to consider are dairy and gluten which is found in barley, rye, sometimes with oats, wheat, and spelt (BROWS). As a naturopathic doctor I see on a regular basis the effects of food sensitivities that can range from abdominal discomfort, heartburn, stubborn weight gain, constipation, allergies, fatigue, headaches, eczema and acne. As this is food allergy awareness week I believe it is very important to assess your diet to see if there are hidden sensitivities that may be causing or contributing to a health concern. Two methods of determining this are a food allergy test and a food elimination challenge. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner to discuss either option.
